REMINDER – Lights for the Community / light installation in public space, Utica, NY/ solar cell, LED, iron / 700x200x20cm 2015
I created the outdoor light sculpture especially for the new community garden. As you can see, the sculpture is almost invisible in the day -- this is when the solar cells in the lights collect the sunlight. Once the sun sets, the lights turn on and shine all night.
I conceived of this piece as a reflection on nature and the act of creation. The sign is in the shape of an arrow, pointing to the sky and stars - its height draws awareness to the public space of the garden; the solar cells highlight ideas of sustainability and nature as giver of life; and the marquee-like bulbs are an ironic reminder of the excitement (natural rather than manmade) that is occurring below.
The installation was created during the Sculpture Space Artist in Residence program (Utica New York), funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

A köztéri fény
installáció egy közösségi kert számára készült. Napközben a mű szinte láthatatlan, ekkor töltődnek fel a szolár panelek, hogy éjjel
visszaadják a begyűjtött
napfényt.
Az ég felé
mutató jel (vagy piramis csúcs) a természetre, és a teremtésre irányítja a
figyelmet. Emellett a közösségi kert gondolatára építve egyszerre emlékeztet a
közösség együttlétének gyakorlatára, illetve a fenntartható, környezettudatos
elvekre. A város közepén, az éjszakában egy új fényes jel ’reklámozza’ mindezt.
Az installáció
a Sculpture Space Inc. (Utica New York), rezidencia program keretében
valósult meg a New York State Council on the Arts and the National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA) és a Derkovits Gyula Képzőművészeti
Ösztöndíj támogatásával.
